Description

The Inchope-Machipanda Road is a section of the Beira – Machipanda Road in the Manica Province.  The detailed design provided for the upgrading of the facility to a 10m wide carriageway (2 x 3.5m lanes + 2 x 1.5m shoulders).  At bridges the carriageway widths were increased from 6.0 m to 7.0 m in most instances.

The rehabilitation of the 153.5 km section of road between Inchope (km 133.5) and Machipanda (km 287) entailed the structural and geometric upgrading of the existing pavement through application of either granular (crushed stone base) (essentially between Inchope and Chimoio) or asphaltic (essentially between Chimoio and Machipanda) overlays.  A combination of these was employed in isolated sections.

The asphalt overlay was specified as continuously graded, medium size type hot-mix asphalt whilst the granular overlay comprised base quality, graded crushed stone.  In summary the project provided for the rehabilitation of approximately 155km of the N6 between Inchope and Machipanda in the Manica Province. The works involved the execution of the following activities:-

 

  • Widening of cuts and fills
  • Strengthening of the existing pavement by means of granular or asphaltic overlays
  • Extending 108 culverts
  • Widening 11 bridge carriageways
  • Adding cantilevered pedestrian walkways to 2 bridges
  • Construction of single and double seal spray and chip surface treatments
  • Carrying out of appurtenant road works including road marking and road signing.

Description

The Project involved the feasibility study, detailed design and supervision of the Periodic Maintenance of the 176 km long section of the N1 between Zandamela and Maxixe.

Phase I – This phase included pavement investigations, EIA, feasibility and economic studies and the detail design of the periodic maintenance works.  The latter included the design of the maintenance or improvement of longitudinal and transverse drainage elements, rehabilitation and maintenance of bridges as well as design of ancillary road works such as road marking, road signs and road side furniture. This phase also included the preparation of the tender documents. The pavement investigations comprised a Visual Condition Survey, Deflection survey, Roughness survey, Test Pitting and DCP Survey. A Traffic Study as input to an Economic Analysis using HDM 4 was also carried out.  A separate EIA report was also produced for the project.

Phase II - This phase included the tendering process and supervision of works during the project implementation phase. The project provided for the periodic maintenance of the section of the EN1 between Zandamela and Maxixe, a distance of approximately 176km.The works involved:-

•    Widening and strengthening of the road shoulders to increase the overall carriageway width from approximately 6m to 9.8m. Strengthening the distressed sections of the existing road pavement through application of a cemented overlay (heavily cement stabilized (7%) sand layer) of 150mm thickness over approximately 24km
•    Application of a double seal surface dressing over the traffic lanes and a single seal surface dressing on the shoulders.  SBS modified bitumen binders were used in both surface dressings to counter the effects of stabilization cracking.
•    Re-establishing the drainage by excavating side, mitre and interceptor drains over the whole length of the road, construction of additional drainage culverts of between 600mm and 1200mm in diameter.
•    Ancillary works including road marking, road signage and other drainage improvements.
•    Repair of damage at two bridges.
•    The improvement of the Lindela road junction, in terms of pavement structure and vertical alignment, and the construction of bus stops and surfaced parking areas in most towns and villages through which the road passes.

Description

The first phase of the project involved the condition survey of approximately 670 km of rural roads and 130 km of trunk road within the Sofala Province of Mozambique in order to prioritise essential works to repair or rehabilitate the routes that had been subjected to flood damage during the 2000/2001exceptional rainy season. The routes comprising the project are as follows:

  • Dondo – Muanza – Inhaminga – Matondo EN 213 (193 km).
  • Caia – Lacerdonia – Chapunga –Marromeu EN 219 (98 km).
  • Caia – Sena – Chemba EN 213 (99 km).
  • Chemba – Chiramba EN 445 (47 km).
  • Lacerdonia – Inhamitanga (44 km).
  • Chemba -Molimo – Canxixe – Maringue EN 1 / Junction EN 215 (176 km).
  • Beira – Dondo – Tica – Inchope EN 6 (132 km).

Comprehensive Road Inspection Reports were prepared containing the road characteristics including width, formation, and condition of gravel surface, alignment and drainage.

Based on this information the consultant has quantified the essential works to be undertaken within the scope of the Terms of Reference. Work items have been grouped in accordance with the SATCC Standard Specifications in order that four contracts may be let to local contractors.  Full Bills of Quantities have been provided for various alternative construction strategies together with recommendations for the priority of the works. Procurement of Contractors and negotiations with the preferred Contractor were undertaken, and a contract awarded. Supervision of Construction also undertaken.

The project ultimately provided for the rehabilitation of the entire road EN223 (now N304), approximately 162km in length from EN103 (now N7) near Mussacama in the south to Colómuè in the north on the border with Malawi near Dedza, all in the Tete Province of Mozambique. The works involved:

  • Breaking up the existing surface and combining sufficient imported sub-base quality material to make up any deficit and to achieve an acceptable vertical profile.
  • Cement stabilised the reworked sub-base to form a 150mm thick layer to a C4 specification.
  • Import and compact 125mm crushed stone base to G2 specification.
  • Surface with a two-coat surface dressing over the trafficked carriageway and a single seal on the shoulders.


In the few areas where the existing selected sub grade and sub-base failed to meet the G9 and G7 specification respectively, the pavement was strengthened to achieve the following design:-

•    125mm G2 Crushed stone base
•    150mm C4 Cement stabilised sub-base
•    150mm G7
•    150mm G9
